At Clarin Elementary School in Plaridel, Misamis Occidental, some classroom chairs had been around for generations. A few were even used by teachers when they were still pupils. Parents repaired broken seats so their children could keep using them.
The school community had learned to make old furniture last. But with 118 learners and nine teachers, the need for safe, comfortable chairs remained.
That changed when Security Bank Foundation, Inc. (SBFI) donated 50 new chairs to the school. Each chair weighs 15 kilograms and is made from 100% recycled plastic. LBC Hari ng Padala Foundation sponsored the delivery, while The Plastic Flamingo, or The Plaf, manufactured the chairs by upcycling marine-bound plastic waste into durable furniture.

The donation came after the school’s teaching staff identified its most pressing needs and reached out to SBFI. School Head Maria Erica C. Ligason said the new chairs were an answered prayer for the community.
The need had been particularly pressing for some learners who previously had to use stools, while some classrooms lacked writing tables, according to Atty. Raymundo Francisco.
For Grade 5 learner Jathniel Francis, 10, the new chair also brought an unexpected lesson. He was amazed that plastic waste from food containers and other sources could become sturdy classroom furniture with a space for his books.

That experience gives recycling a practical meaning. Instead of learning about waste through a textbook alone, students can see how discarded plastic can be collected, transformed, and given another purpose.
The project also shows how different groups can contribute to one community need. A school asked for help, a foundation provided the chairs, another organization helped transport them, and a social enterprise turned waste into something useful.
There are many needs in schools that can be addressed through similar partnerships. If your company, organization, school, or group of friends has the means to help, consider finding a community that needs support and working together to make a useful change happen.
