Deep in Pagturian in Puerto Galera, the Irayan Mangyan community continues to protect the forests that have supported their people across generations. Their connection to their ancestral land carries knowledge, traditions, and practices that guide how they care for nature and preserve biodiversity.
To support these efforts, Ayala Foundation facilitated a Steward Leadership Training with community leaders, forest patrollers, and nursery workers. The activity created a space where participants shared experiences, discussed challenges, and explored ways to strengthen their work in protecting their forests and cultural heritage. Through conversations and participatory workshops, members of the community identified their strengths and developed practical actions that can help sustain their environmental efforts.
The training also highlighted the value of local knowledge in caring for ecosystems and passing these lessons on to future generations. One community leader shared appreciation for the opportunity, saying, “Nagpapasalamat kami sa pagsasanay na ito. Malaking tulong talaga ito sa amin.”
