Coca-Cola Philippines expands PET bottle collection to Biñan City

Walking down the streets of Barangay Canlalay, the familiar sight of local sari-sari stores offers more than daily household essentials. Fifty neighborhood shops across ten barangays in Biñan City, Laguna, now double as active recycling collection hubs for clear plastic packaging.

Through the Tapon to Ipon initiative, Coca-Cola Philippines works to place recycling bins directly into daily neighborhood life. Instead of plastic bottles ending up in local waterways or landfills, residents can drop off used clear PET bottles of any brand at their nearest participating retailer.

For store owners, the effort brings tangible returns. Retailers earn points for every batch of plastic collected, converting into inventory rewards like Coca-Cola goods, online shopping credits, food supplies, and utility bill assistance. The collected materials head directly to PETValue Philippines in Cavite, the nation’s first food-grade bottle-to-bottle recycling facility.

Ma. Christine Ponce-Garcia, Coca-Cola Philippines Senior Director for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, highlighted the value of shared responsibility. “We know that strong and effective recycling value chains cannot be built by one organization alone. It takes collaboration,” Ponce-Garcia stated. “May this partnership inspire more communities to see every bottle returned.”

Key stakeholders driving the project on the ground include Biñan City Mayor Angelo Alonte, DILG Laguna, and BEST Inc., who together support community mobilization, operational logistics, and program monitoring. The South Luzon expansion marks a growing national network, reaching over 170 cities and municipalities since 2021.

Small actions, when multiplied across neighborhoods, build the groundwork for lasting environmental resilience. Every meaningful environmental effort starts with a simple step right where you are. Take inspiration from these Biñan shopkeepers: gather your household recyclables, organize a collection drive with your neighbors, or connect with your local government unit to bring recycling access closer to home.
