Text messages offering quick cash, surprise delivery notifications, and urgent calls about compromised bank accounts can make anyone pause. For elderly citizens navigating smartphones, these everyday interactions often carry real financial risks. Consumer fraud topped the list of complaints from older Filipinos last year, making digital safety a vital shield for their independence.

Inside the Taguig Convention Center recently, over 300 grandmothers and grandfathers gathered to learn how to defend themselves against digital threats through Globe’s Senior Digizen program. Ka-Globe employee volunteers sat alongside the participants, walking them through common tactics like phishing emails, fake online deals, and suspicious links. Instead of general advice, the facilitators shared step-by-step guidance on how to verify sender details, protect one-time passwords, and pause before clicking unfamiliar links.

Launched in 2024 to foster digital inclusion, the Senior Digizen initiative helps older Filipinos build essential digital skills and greater confidence in using technology. Organized alongside the Taguig City Government and the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs, this recent session formed part of Globe’s annual GDay celebration through Globe of Good, where employees contribute their time to direct community work.
Volunteers worked closely with participants to answer questions and demonstrate mobile tools that help them keep in touch with family and access essential services. Private sector partners including HONOR, McDonald’s, AC Health, Healthway, and Generika supported the activity with meals, tokens, and raffle prizes, turning digital literacy into a practical form of community care.

Digital tools ought to make life easier for everyone, regardless of age. When local organizations and private companies come together, they build safer online spaces for vulnerable community members.
Your business, workplace team, or group of friends can start similar efforts in your local barangay by hosting simple workshops or helping older neighbors navigate their mobile devices safely.
