Learning does not end when the school bell rings. For many children, some of the best lessons come from discovering a new story, asking questions, or sharing a book with others.
That is the idea behind SM Book Nook, a community reading and learning space under SM Cares that gives children and families free access to books, educational activities, and creative experiences. Located at SM North EDSA and SM Podium, the spaces encourage young readers to see books as something to enjoy, not simply something assigned in school.
Throughout June, Book Nook brought learning to life through activities that combined literature, history, and creativity. In partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Fully Booked, it hosted a community readathon of El Filibusterismo, inviting participants to revisit one of José Rizal’s most influential works while exploring its lessons and relevance today. Young learners also took part in an interactive archaeology session that connected history with hands-on discovery.
The month also wrapped up with “A Chapter for Fathers,” a family activity that encouraged children to write heartfelt messages for their dads using free Hallmark cards displayed on a community board.
“Book Nook was created to be a space where people can feel welcome to read, learn, imagine, and connect,” said Book Nook pioneer Shereen Sy. She added that the team hopes more students and families will visit the spaces and rediscover how stories can complement what children learn in school while creating meaningful moments together.
Book Nook continues to host storytelling sessions, book readings, workshops, and community activities throughout the year, making reading more accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages.
